Overview

The Department of Preventive Medicine is an independent department within the School of Medicine of the Stony Brook University Medical Center. It was established when the medical school first opened in 1971 with goals and composition that were well aligned with the school's focus on community service and an interdisciplinary approach to research and teaching with faculty representing the clinical, social, and behavioral sciences, as well as the humanities. With its population health perspective and focus on all aspects of preventing disease and disability, the Department has developed into an important force in establishing links with area-wide agencies such as the two county health departments. Research activities address understanding the multiple determinants of health and illness including social, behavioral, environmental, demographic, occupational, policy, economic, and genetic as well as effective medical and public health interventions.

The department applies its expertise toward three major goals:
  1. Teaching of the disciplines of preventive medicine (e.g., biostatistics and epidemiology) and the social and ethical context of health care.
  2. Conducting a broad range of research in the epidemiology and prevention of disease as well as in healthcare delivery, evaluation and policy.
  3. Providing occupational, environmental and clinical preventive medicine services.
The Department of Preventive Medicine's goals are accomplished through the work of the faculty and staff within its divisions and programs. There are five divisions: Major programs include The Graduate Program in Public Health (GPPH); the Residency Program in General Preventive Medicine and Public Health; the Biostatistical Consulting Core, the Institute for Medicine in Contemporary Society, and the Long Island Occupational and Environmental Health Center (LIOEHC).
